Kolkata Knight Riders is the IPL franchise which has won two IPL trophies in this decade under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir, but now the team faces a roller coaster ride throughout the IPL2020. They were totally inconsistent towards their journey with lack of intent in batting and bowling. Kolkata Knight Riders had seven wins out of 14 matches which made them to achieve 14 points in the tournament placed at fifth position of the points table. Due to the negative net run rate, they could not qualify for the playoffs which ultimately made RCB and SRH to qualify for the playoffs that also stand on 14 points in the league stage.

This season was an unexpected call for them leaving many questions for their journey, their skipper Dinesh Kartik had also gave up the captaincy in the mid-season of the tournament and Eoin Morgan took the leadership of team who tried his best to maintain the wheels of team but the damage was already caused. KKR had only two wins out of their last five matches. Even the mid-season change of captain, didn’t made any positive for the team.

Aakash Chopra, cricket analyst and commentator had reckoned that KKR should retain these players ahead of IPL2021. Chopra states that KKR should retain three players for the IPL2021. He picked Varun Chakravarthy, Andre Russell and Shubman Gill for the upcoming edition.

“I thought a lot and I feel that there are only three players they should be retaining. If they retain any more, they will lose money from the kitty and will not be able to build a good team,” Aakash Chopra quoted in his Facebook Video.

Must to retain Andre Russell- Aakash Chopra

“The first name is Andre Russell. This year may not have been good but he is a T20 rock star. If you release him and try to buy him at the auction, he will be very expensive, so it is better to retain him. You also create a relationship with the player and tell him that he is an integral part of the team” quoted by Aakash Chopra.

Russell managed to score 117 runs in just 9 matches in IPL2020. He registered only 6 wickets in 7 matches. The performance what he gave was never expected from him and ultimately failed to contribute for the team in UAE.

“The second player I can see is Varun Chakravarthy. He is taking wickets; he is a mystery bowler and is accurate. If he goes into the auction, he will be very expensive, everybody needs a mystery spinner and Varun Chakravarthy is that guy for you.” Said by Chopra.

Varun Chakravarthy was listed in the purple cap holder with 17 wickets in just 13 matches. He had achieved his best performance against Delhi Capitals by picking 5 wickets by conceding just 20 runs in 4 overs with an economy of 5.00. He was even selected for the Australian series but unfortunately missed out due to the shoulder injury.

“Last but not least, who could actually be their first retention Name is Shubman Gill,” said by Aakash Chopra.

The opener had a decent season by scoring 440 runs in 14 matches for KKR in IPL2020.
