Delhi Capitals pace contingent is getting thinner and thinner with each day they are closing in on IPL 2020. The franchise suffered one more body blow when England all-rounder Chris Woakes decided to take break from IPL 2020.
The senior England all-rounder was included by Delhi Capitals in this year’s IPL auction by spending INR 1.5 crore. Citing the reason of staying afresh for the England’s home summer season, the pacer has withdrawn himself from the upcoming IPL 2020.
This year’s home summer season is going to be very crucial for England this year as they will host Pakistan and West Indies for a total of six Tests in June. England are currently preparing for two Tests against Sri Lanka.
Woakes’ absence from IPL 2020 has made Delhi Capital’s situation a little vulnerable even before the IPL 2020. They have already been riddled with pacer Ishant Sharma’s knee injury and Rabada’s groin injury.
While Ishant Sharma has resurfaced his knee injury, Kagiso Rabada sustained a groin injury during recently-concluded T20I series against Australia. With two of their premier bowlers under the scanner and Chris Woakes unavailable for the tournament, Delhi Capitals found themselves in a spot of bother.
Delhi Capitals will kick off their Indian Premier League campaign against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) on March 30. The Shreyas Iyer-led side has never won the coveted IPL trophy, even finishing with wooden spoon a couple of times in the 12 editions of the tournament. But now with a young captain at the helm and a coach like Ricky Ponting the Capitals will look to put up a good show in IPL 2020.
Chris Woakes has previously been part of Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore franchises in the IPL. The pacer, in 18 IPL games so far, has picked 25 wickets at an economy rate of over 9.
