Lucknow’s Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, popularly known as Ekana Stadium, is making the headlines as there are speculations that it can serve as second home for either Delhi Capitals or Kings XI Punjab in VIVO IPL 2020.
Ekana Stadium is currently Home Ground for the Afghanistan Cricket team, which recently played a full series against West Indies.
Ekana stadium is one of the best world class stadiums with a seating capacity of over 50000 people. It hosted a T20I on 6 Dec 2018 between India and West Indies registering massive crowd for its maiden International Game.
Lucknow, also known as City of Nawabs, has been one of cities which has plethora of Cricket Lovers. If any one of Delhi Capitals or Kings XI Punjab manages to make this its home. It will increase their fan base with a world class stadium at their disposal.
While Delhi Capital has Kotla, recently remamed as Arun Jaitley Cricket stadium, as its home ground since the inception of the IPL, Kings XI Punjab has Mohali stadium as its home in IPL 2019, they also had Indore as their Home Ground in 2018 but either that did not help increase their fan base.
Speaking to IANS, the chairman-cum-managing director of Ekana Group, UdaySinha said, “It is one of the best stadiums in the country and feels really good to see the interest. Also, the revenue generated for the game between India and West Indies (debut game at the venue) was a record.”
“We are speaking to both Kings XI as well as Delhi Capitals, and we are yet to come to a decision on this. We will have to wait and see how it goes as the views of the BCCI and UPCA will also be taken into account apart from the discussions that are held with the two franchises,” he stated.
As both the teams are eager to make Ekana their home ground, it will be interesting to see how the bidding process pans out. But whoever wins the battles of rights, one thing is for sure that Lucknowites are going to live this occasion to the fullest as the ardent fans of the game.
