Suresh Raina’s journey in international cricket has been a story itself. Having made his debut at the age of 19, the 33-year old has represented India in 226 ODIs and 18 Tests thus far. His last international appearance for India came in 2018 against England.
Suresh Raina has been on fire recently. In a recent interview with FanCode, Raina opened up on a number of things that he thinks went against him and also about his relationship with players and selectors.
According to Raina the senior players have always supported him but the selectors, in the recent times, have not been true to their responsibilities. The left-hander is highly critical of the miscommunication between former chief of selectors, MSK Prasad and himself regarding his ouster from the international team.
“I feel somewhere communication should have happened, I’ve been saying that. Senior players have supported me, the selector isn’t in my hands. There have been many great selectors, Dilip Vengsarkar supported the players, Kiran More sir, there were many good selectors who used to communicate with players, be it a junior or senior,” revealed Raina.
Raina also stressed the point that a selector must clearly communicate to the players and say it on face. “A selector has a right to tell face to face, I would prefer that because I’ve learnt it from my father and MS Dhoni. You say it on my face, if there’s a problem, I will solve it,” he added.
After a slight dip in form in 2015-16, Raina was dropped from the team but regular impactful performances in IPL and domestics kept him in fray. Later, he was also called up for some internationals in 2017 and 2018 but despite some good performances, he was again dropped as India kept playing musical chairs for the no.4 slot in the eleven.
Raina also revealed the communication happened to current captain Virat Kohli about his fitness but at the same time he was critical of discarding a player without communication. According to Raina, if a player gives so much to his country, he must know the reasons behind his ouster at least.
“Virat told me to improve my fitness, I did it, that’s why he made me play. Rohit always knew my talent. I don’t have any problem with any player, but as a selector, they should be more professional. I am not targeting anyone, I am just saying that sometimes you give so much to the country, you work so hard, stay away from the family, I personally think we should get answers to these questions,” said the left-hander.
