Former Indian opener K Srikanth, talking to star sport, put his views over the question of “Who should partner Rohit partner in World T20 this year?” and the veteran opener unanimously supported KL Rahul for the job.
In his views, KL Rahul is much better an opening batsman than Dhawan in shortest format of the game and there should not be any debate over it. The Numbers in the last year and so also favours KL Rahul in this context and there is no doubt KL is much devastating than Dhawan at the top of the order.
The former chairman of selectors, Srikkanth said, “Runs against SL don’t count. If I was chairman of selectors, I won’t pick Dhawan in the T20 WC squad. There is no competition between him and Rahul. Only one winner.”
Indian management is going to face a major head-ache after the series against Sri Lanka as Rohit Sharma, who has been rested for the series, will make a comeback after the series. And with that the management will definitely face the question, “Who is going to partner Rohit at the top of the order?”
This question won’t be easy to answer for the management as Both Rahul and Dhawan has done enough to press their case for the slot. Dhawan has been regular in the team since 2013 champions trophy but his recent form has not been great specially in shortest format of the game. In 2019, Dhawan played 13 T20Is and scored 272 runs at an average of 22.66 at an abysmal strike rate of 110.56. It will not be wrong to say that the time is running out for the left hander.
On the other hand, KL Rahul has been in stupendous from since the Cricket World Cup 2019 in which he opened the innings along with Rohit after an injury to Dhawan. Since then, he has grabbed the opportunity with both hands. In the series against West Indies, the Karnataka batsman scored two fifties in T20 series along with a century in the ODI assignment. With the T20 World Cup not far away, Dhawan needs to deliver urgently considering the current form of KL in shorter formats of the game else he might end up missing the bus to World T20
