KL Rahul, the multi-dimensional cricketer from Karnataka, has been one the few positives for Indian Team in an otherwise humiliating ODI series loss against New Zealand. With this win they avenged their 0-5 loss in the T20I in a remarkable way on Tuesday when they completed a 3-0 sweep of India in the ODI series.
In the third ODI, after inviting India to bat first, New Zealand had a good start with the bowl as they nipped out India’s top three with just 62 runs on the board and KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer found themselves in hot waters again. This time round, KL Rahul took the anchor’s role stitching a 100-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer (62) and a 107-run partnership with Manish Pandey (42).
In the process, KL Rahul cracked his 5th One Day international hundred. The Karnataka batsman scored 112 off just 113 balls to help India post a formidable 297 in their allotted quota of 50 overs. But as the ODI series has panned out till now, New Zealand scaled down the target with 17 balls to spare.
In the post-match show at Cricbuzz live, Zaheer Khan, former Indian bowling stalwart, backed his opinion of including KL Rahul in the test team in place of injured Rohit Sharma. India has picked Shubman Gill, Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal as their openers for the Test series. Even the rich form of KL could not tempt the Indian selectors to go with KL in the test team.
“There are just two Test matches on the tour and it is a year when the side will be playing predominantly T20s, there are just five Test matches and the way he is going about things it might happen. That’s a point I have been trying to make, Rahul is in a phase where all these things are happening around him so I am sure he is not bothered,” Zaheer Khan told Cricbuzz Live.
“He knows that when I get an opportunity I know how to approach it and I am just gonnafocus on things I can control. I know that he would have loved to be there to play the Test matches, he is in such a form that he just wants to be out there and keep scoring runs. And that’s something that has definitely changed with him and it’s the loss of the team and not his loss,” he added.
