From the ‘Koffee With Karan’ controversy to India’s limited overs wicket-keeper batsman, it has been a remarkable turn-around for KL Rahul in a span of one year. KL Rahul made some controversial comments on a chat show ‘Koffee With Karan’ in January last year. He along with Hardik Pandya was banned by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The controversy also threatened him to miss the flight of Cricket World Cup 2019.
But now, one year later, Rahul has expressed as to how his life changed after the incident. Opening up on the incident, Rahul said, “I personally needed a hit like that to wake up and know which direction I’m going in. I realised I wasn’t good at anything else [except cricket]. I was too far into this, I’d chosen what I have to do and I had to give it everything. From there, my focus became better. It made me stronger and more disciplined.”
KL Rahul learnt from the incident and changed his thought process inculcating more discipline and hard work in his routine. The talented batsman from Karnataka also faced a severe criticism for his comments. From his family to his friends and everyone cared for him, faced the tough period after the incident. But the batsman portrayed a great determination to overcome all the odds.
“Everybody kept saying time will heal, but you don’t see it as a young guy. I hadn’t really performed well earlier in Australia [December 2018-January 2019]. There was that frustration. It was tough on my family as well because my mom and dad worry about society, what people will say,” Rahul said.
“I sulked, I won’t lie. I didn’t want to do anything. The only thing that made me forget what was happening was training, cricket and some golf. Now, after a year, when people say ‘time heals’, ‘everything happens for the best’ etc, these clichéd lines start to feel true,” the Karnataka wicket-keeper batsman added.
As soon as the ban lifted over, KL returned to the field once again and did not disappoint all of them this time. Since the first opportunity, after the ban, he has performed so well that the prominent batsman is the new talk of the town in limited overs cricket for team India.
He has scored runs as freely as anyone across formats and at different batting positions and in all situations. Rahul also took the wicket-keeping gloves just as fish takes to water and now has become an indispensable member of team India in the limited overs format.
