Prior to the series Legendary Batsman VVS Laxman spoke about the possible team combination and game plan for team India. Laxman whose home town is also Hyderabad backed KL Rahul to open the innings along with Rohit Sharma.
With Virat Kohli back in the team after opting out of the recent T20 series against Bangladesh will slot back in the eleven at his favorite No.3 position. FYI, KL Rahul batted at No.3 in the recently concluded T20 series. It would have been difficult to fit in KL Rahul in eleven, Had Shikhar Dhawan not injured himself playing for his team against Maharashtra in a match in Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy. But with regular opener Dhawan out of the team, it is a great opportunity for KL Rahul to make the spot his own.
KL Rahul, has been in good form for some time in International T20s as well as in Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy where his team Karnataka successfully defended their Title.
This is what VVS Laxman said speaking at Star Sport game plan:
“The big question is that with Virat Kohli back and K.L. Rahul doing a good job batting at number three so then where will he fit? I believe that it is time that K.L. Rahul opens with Rohit Sharma. I would definitely have Rahul open with Rohit for the West Indies Series.”
VVS Laxman also heaped praises on Mumbai Batsman Shreyas Iyer for his innings in the Last T20 International in Nagpur against Bangladesh. ShreyasIyer batting at No.4 controlled the innings very well as he first rotated the strike till KL Rahul was there and then blasted his way to 33 ball 62 helping India post a formidable score.
Recently, Indian Chief Selector also backed Shreys Iyer to be their No.4 for the WI Series.
