Indian Spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja were handed a thrashing by Ross Taylor and Tom Latham in the first ODI of the ongoing India’s tour of New Zealand in Hamilton. Chasing a mammoth target of 348, New Zealand defeated India by 4 wickets.
Veteran batsman Ross Taylor scored his 21st ODI century in an utterly dominating manner overcoming the 0-5 drubbing in the T20I series. Taylor scored 109* runs off just 84 balls with the help of 10 fours and four sixes to claim the match and Man of The Match award also. The highlight of his innings was that he did not let Indian spinner settle on the flat pitch at any point of time in the match. Former Indian Spinner, Harbhajan Singh praised the innings played by the star batsman in his tweet.

In a disappointing performance, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav gave away 148 runs in 20 combined overs. While Jadeja remained wicketless, Yadav did pick two wickets but failed to create an impact on a consistent basis.Surprisingly, Indian Captain Virat Kohli did not used Kedar Jadhav in the middle overs as he has been highly successful in the past also providing crucial breakthrough in crunch situations.
In an interview with Hindustan Times after the match, Harbhajan Singh stressed the importance to include leg- spinner Yuzvendra Chahal in the playing XI for the second ODI at Auckland on Saturday.
“I would like to see both spinners playing together – Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. This New Zealand team will play fast bowlers on any given day and they will take anyone on.
Ponting the need to pick wicket in the middle overs, Harbhajan suggested that Chahal can come in place of Jadhav, who has done well for India when it comes to finishing the innings. “But when it comes to playing spinners, it has always been a case for them. You can get those wickets in the middle overs. So I would like to see both the spinners play together. Maybe leave out Kedar Jadhav and play an extra spinner,” Harbhajan was quoted as saying.
The second match between the two teams will be played tomorrow at Auckland. However, it is most unlikely that Indian management will tinker with the playing XI after just one bad performance.
