As per a report in The Times of India, Rohit Sharma, who suffered a hamstring injury during the 5th T20I on the ongoing tour of New Zealand, have had quite a serious injury and have already asked for a rest for the home series against South Africa next month. Rohit Sharma suffered a hamstring injury while going for a run in the 5th T20I at Mount Maunganui. Rohit Sharma pulled his calf in the 16th over of the innings and looked in utter discomfort after that. Even the treatment from physio did not give him relief and Rohit eventually retired in the same over after playing a handy innings of 60 runs.
The selectors have named Mayank Agarwal as Rohit’s replacement in the ODI squad while in the test squad Prithvi Shaw will return to the side in place of him.
Mayank will join KL Rahul and Prithvi Shaw as backup opener in the ODI squad. With Rohit, both the specialist ODI openers (Shikhar Dhawan is already out of the tour with Shoulder injury) have been ruled out of the ODI series and India will be forced to open with a fresh opening pair this time.
On the other hand, India will go into the series with Shaw, Mayank and Shubman Gill as their opening options. The 20-year-old Shaw made his Test debut against West Indies at home in 2018, and was even picked for the tour of Australia, where he suffered an ankle injury during practice. He was also slapped with a backdated suspension last year for a doping violation. But after that he has been good form in the domestics.
Gill is yet to make his Test debut, but has impressed in the A setup for more than a year. The promising Punjab batsman scored 83 and 204* against New Zealand A. Team India will play a 3-match ODI series followed by a two test assignment in this month only.
