In a setback news for Kolkata Knight Riders, their star spinner Sunil Narine has been reported for suspect bowling action after the match against Kings XI Punjab in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. The West Indies spinner bowled a match winning spell in the match as KKR registered a narrow win against KXIP.
Bowing in the middle and death overs, the off-spinner chocked KXIP in 18th and 20th over to derail KXIP’s chase. In his quota of 4-overs, the 32-year old conceded just 28 runs and picked up two wickets at crucial junctures to turn the match on its head. Waving his spin magic in death overs, the spinner foxed Nicholas Pooran and Mandeep Singh in his 3rd and 4th over respectively to defend 22 overs in last 3 overs of chase.
But to his despair, on-field umpires reported his bowing action after the game ended. “The report was made by the on-field umpires according to the IPL’s Suspected Illegal Bowling Action Policy, Narine will be placed on the Warning List and is permitted to continue to bowl in the tournament,” the IPL release stated. However, since it is the first warning, Sunil Narine will continue in IPL 2020 to bowl unless he is reported once more.
Sunil Narine has a long history of being reported for illegal bowing action. In 2014, he was reported twice in the now-defunct Champions League tournament and subsequently, went on to miss the 2015 World Cup. After that he was also reported in IPL 2015 but get away with just a warning but in the same year, he was suspended from bowling in November after being reported during an ODI in Sri Lanka. Following suspension, the off-spinner even went on to remodel his bowling action but his tryst with reported action haven’t left him yet.
