The introduction of Decision Review System (DRS) was a historic moment in the cricket. With increasing use of technology, the International Cricket Council, after several changes and meetings, introduced the DRS in order to give playing teams a fair chance of reviewing the on-field umpire’s decision. Like many teams, team India was also reluctant to the DRS until the ultra-edge and hotspot technologies added to make DRS more accurate.
But so far, this DRS has proved to be Achilles’ heel for most of the international and franchise teams. Reviewing a decision is not everyone’s cup of tea, even the greatest of cricket captains and sharpest cricket brains like Steve Smith, Kane Williamson have poor DRS record. For all the cricket experience the players have, the DRS system has always sprung surprises time and again.
However, comparatively team India and Chennai Super Kings have fared well in this department, courtesy the Keeper and Captain MS Dhoni. Such is the record of Dhoni using DRS that people even named DRS – “Dhoni Review System”. Dhoni, for being in line of ball while wicket-keeping, has a good idea of ball’s line and movement.
However, a longer than expected absence of Dhoni from competitive cricket seems to have taken toll on DRS also. In the inaugural match of #Dream11 IPL 2020, Dhoni made a DRS call that felt more of like desperation rather than instinct and experience.
On the fourth ball of the 14th over of MI innings, Piyush Chawla managed to hit the pads of Saurabh Tiwary as batsman went for the big sweep and missed to be hit in front of stumps. However, even a vociferous appeal from Chawla and Dhoni didn’t yield the desired response from umpire as the googly seemed to be missing the off-stump.
Immediately, Dhoni asked Chawla for his suggestion. The leg-spinner, however, was little confident of taking DRS. But keen on getting Saurabh Tiwary out, Dhoni didn’t waste a second and went for the review. But as things panned out, the ball-tricked showed the ball easily missing off-stump.
On watching MSD missing a DRS call, the twitter went berserk with different memes and opinions.
