Former Indian Opener, Gautam Gambhir has been highly critical of – current Indian Cricket captain – Virat Kohli’s captaincy of late. While there is no one denying the fact that Virat is one of the most passionate scholars of the game and that clearly shows in his captaincy style also, this is also true that team India has not won a single ICC trophy under his captaincy.
In a recent episode of Star Sports’s talk show, the left-handed batsman emphasised the point of Cricket being a team game and the qualities a player needs to acquire to be leader. Lauding the personal milestones of Virat, Gautam Gambhir also gave example of the likes of Jacques Kallis, Brain Lara, who scored tonnes of runs without any big trophy under their name.
“Lots! It is a team sport. You can keep scoring your own runs. There are people like Brian Lara who have scored so many runs. There are people like Jacques Kallis who have won nothing. Virat Kohli at the moment has won nothing, to be honest as a leader. He has a lot to achieve.” Gambhir stated in the Star Sports’ Show Cricket Connected.
Though the sheer passion for the game has made Virat the most successful modern cricketer, he needs to find ways to achieve the feats, his predecessor does, in captaincy.
Virat Kohli has been a part of 2011 World Cup winning team as well as the 2013 Champions Trophy team, but under his Captaincy team India has lost both 2017 Champions Trophy and 2019 World Cup. In both tournament, India started extremely well only to succumb in the finales to be knocked out of the tournament.
Gautam Gambhir, who scored crucial fifties in India’s World T20 and World Cup wins in 2007 and 2011 respectively, added that a player might scores thousands of runs but it’s the number of big trophies that fulfils the entire career. “You can keep scoring those big runs but according to me, till you win those big trophies you will never be able to fulfil your entire career.” the 38-year old added.
