Team India is gearing up for the upcoming World T20 in Australia as BCCI has scheduled a number of T20Is to give players enough game practice for the marquee event. These series serve as mock drills prior to the showpiece event.
India is currently hosting Sri Lanka for a three match T20I series. After this India will tour New Zealand to play their first ever five match bilateral T20 series. This series will also give the idea about the final team India would like to take to Australia in the similar conditions.
Though the current Indian team looks almost settled in every department. There are still some grey areas that need to be finalised. One of the biggest questions is, “Who will be Rohit Sharma’s opening partner?”
With Dhawan’s form and strike rate dipping lately and KL Rahul’s rise as an opener since the Cricket World Cup 2019, Indian management is in the big conundrum. For that Indian management have also given Rohit rest for the current series, trying both openers at the same time.
Former Indian Batsman, VVS Laxman, who is also a mentor of SunrisersHyderabad in Indian Premier League and an active commentator, named the players who can make to the World Cup team. Speaking at the pre-match show on Star Sports, VVS Laxman shared his team of 15 members.
The stylish batsman form Hyderabad has included almost every possible contender for the slot except for Sikhar Dhawan and Washington Sundar. VVS has also excluded Shardul Thakur and Navdeep Saini in the pace department as he has gone with the quartet of Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar and Mohammad Shami.
Dhawan, who was part of SRH setup till 2018, was one of the mainstays of the SRH batting line-up. But after 2018 the left handed batsman has struggled in shortest format of the game. In 2019, Dhawan played 13 T20Is and scored 272 runs at an average of 22.66 at an abysmal strike rate of 110.56. On the other hand, KL has grabbed every opportunity with both hands.
