After getting whitewashed in the Three-match ODI series by Sri Lanka, West Indies finally feel at home during the first T20I at Pallekele. West Indies defeated Sri Lanka by 25 runs in the first T20I to register their first win on the ongoing West Indies’ tour of Sri Lanka. With this win West Indies also took an unassailable 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
West Indies Captain Kieron Pollard elected to bat first on a good looking batting track of Pallekele. West Indies openers proved the decision of batting first right one as the opening pair of Brandon King (33) and Lendl Simmons scored 67* (51) added a quick–fire 74-run opening stand in just 8.2 overs to set the things rolling for West Indies. Russell and Pollard provided the finishing touches to West Indian innings with 35 and 34 run cameos to set a 197-run target for Sri Lanka.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka did not have a great start of the chase as they were restricted to 56/5 in the powerplay and eventually bundled out for 171 in 19.1 overs. Oshane Thomas was pick of the bowlers for West Indies as the speedster registered career-best bowling figures of 3-0-28-5.
However, the hosts were saved from humiliation by a spirited rescue act by wicket-keeper batsman Kusal Perera and all-rounder Wanidu Hasaranga as the duo stitched an87-run partnership in just 57 balls for the sixth wicket.
While Kusal was the aggressor of the two- scoring 66 runs off just 38 balls with the help of six fours and three sixes. Wanidu Hasaranga ably supported the left-hander with a well compiled 44 off 34 balls. In a fighting innings the all-rounder hit four fours.
However, the highlight of Hasaranga’s innings was an unorthodox shot that the all-rounder played off a delivery from West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo. Wanidu Hasaranga, in a bid to free the arms, went off the pitch to hit the ball over the infield in off-side. Though the effort did not fetch him just a single yet it was a valiant effort from the Right –hander.
