Mike Hesson, the director of Royal Challengers Bangalore, spoke up after the end of Thrusday’s IPL auction. He was happy after the successful auction he had on 19 Dec 2019.
In a video he talked about their auction strategy, Mike Hesson said they were very mindful of what they had planned as they picked Dale Steyn at the last of the auction after he had gone unsold twice. He said, “(he was) always part of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s plans”, “We knew we wanted Steyn but we knew if we put a bid on him early, it might have gone up to three or four crore, which would have had flow-on effects,” Hesson said in a video posted by RCB.
Steyn also played for RCB in 2019 before a shoulder injury cut his season short. He was signed as a replacement of Nathan-Coulter-Nile in mid of the tournament. This time RCB managed to grab the services of South-African speedster at his base price- INR 2CR.
Mike Hesson said that they adopted the same strategy for Isuru Udana as well.

“We thought Udana was going to be well sought after, so we had to slow-play that one a little bit. In the end, it worked out the way we wanted but it did require a sense of patience, which is not one of my main attributes. I probably exchanged a couple of hundred messages with Virat [Kohli, the RCB captain] for a couple of hours. I think he thought we went to sleep in the middle for a couple of hours as well, but he was well aware of what our planning was. He was keen at the end, as we were, to get Udana and Steyn,“ added Mike Hesson.
This is how RCB team composition looked like before and after auction-
