Finally, after a long wait Indian team squad for world cup 2019 was announced today by Chairman of selection committee MSK Prasad. In this article we will discuss about what MSK Prasad said in press conference.
Finally, the doubt on back-up wicketkeeper is cleared today. Dinesh Karthik was included as back-up wicketkeeper. On asked by reporters why was Dinesh Karthik preferred over Rishabh pant, Prasad said “The second wicket-keeper comes into play only if Mahi (MS Dhoni) is injured. We went ahead with Karthik because of his experience in big matches. The situation that was discussed in the selection committee meeting is one of them [Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik] will play in the XI only if MS Dhoni is injured.
Under such circumstances in a crunch match, who is the best guy who can handle the pressure? That’s is the reason that went in favour of Dinesh Karthik. Wicket-keeping also matters. That is the reason why we went with Dinesh Karthik otherwise, Pant is full of talent, there’s a lot of time for him. It’s unfortunate that he has missed out. Under pressure, we have seen Dinesh Karthik finish matches. So that’s scored for him.”
The Indian team for World Cup 2019 comprises five specialist batsmen, two wicketkeepers, three fast bowlers, three all-rounders and two specialist spinners. On inclusion of Jadeja he said that “In the last one year or so, these two wrist spinners have done well. Wickets might be a bit more dry. Jadeja might come in handy.”
On asked why Vijay Shankar is preferred over Ambati Rayudu, he said
“After the Champions Trophy, we have tried a few middle order options. We gave a few more chances to Rayudu but what Vijay Shankar offers is 3 dimensional. If the conditions are overcast. He might bowl a bit and he is a fantastic fielder. He is a batsman who can bowl.”
According to MSK this is balanced squad as there are varieties of options available in every field. He said “We have plenty of options at No. 4. In the team, we have the luxury of 7 bowlers. We have covered all the bases and this is one of the most balanced Indian sides for the World Cup.”
He also added that Khaleel Ahmed and Navdeep Saini were also discussed as back-up pacers and they would be on stand-by, if required will fly down to England if the need arises. He said “Khaleel and Saini were discussed and they will be around. If the need arises, one of them will go to England”.
