BCCI have organised 12th edition of IPL this year. Due to growing popularity of women’s cricket there is a demand to oragainse a women’s IPL also. Last year BCCI organized a one-off exhibition match of women’s IPL. This year they have gone a step ahead by orgainsing 4 exhibition matches of women’s IPL to be played during IPL 2019 play-offs.
Last year, there were only two teams in women’s IPL exhibition matches but this year BCCI have increased it to three teams. The demand to organize women’s IPL matches increased after popularity of Australia’s women Big Bash League. Also in last few years, Women cricket fan following has increased so BCCI is organizing these matches to take popularity of women cricket on next level.
Yesterday BCCI announced the venues of play-offs matches of IPL 2019. They also announced the venues of women’s exhibition matches. The three teams that are going to participate are Supernovas, Trailblazers and Velocity. Out of them, Supernovas and Trailblazers have already played a one-off exhibition match last year. Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur led the two sides The Trailblazers and The Supernovas respectively. This time also these two will lead their respective teams. The third team velocity will be led by Mithali Raj.
The Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur will be hosting the women’s T20 exhibition matches. The first match is on May 6, which is clashing with the Lok Sabha elections but the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) has got the required clearance from the authorities. Next matches will be played on 6, 8 and 9 before the final on May 11.
As reported earlier, overseas players from six countries will be part of the tournament this year. Previous year, players included from Australia, England and New Zealand, apart from India. The increase in no of countries is an attempt by the BCCI to increase the strength and popularity of women’s T20 in India and abroad.
