The BCCI is set to organise a three-team women’s tournament during the Indian Premier League playoffs! Are you shocked, don’t be. Actually, BCCI from last year has been organising T20 exhibition matches to promote women’s cricket and also creating a scope for women’s IPL tournament.

Previous year BCCI organized a T20 match of Female cricket players at the Wankhede Stadium before a game featuring Mumbai Indians. Players included from Australia, England and New Zealand, apart from India. This year women cricketers from almost 6 countries are going to participate.

The matches will be played on the same day before play-offs matches of IPL 2019 on the same venue at 4 PM. Each team will face other team in the tournament. The top two teams will qualify for the final set to be played in Chennai on May 12. Previous year, where a one-off exhibition match was played in Mumbai, this year we will see three teams in this tournament.

Are you excited for this tournament?

BCCI has always wanted to start a tournament like IPL for women cricketers and this tournament is one of the steps being taken in that direction. Apart from some of the top players, who were involved in the tournament last year, the likes of Dane van Niekerk, Deandra Dottin, Marizanne Kapp and Chamari Athapaththu are also likely to be invited.

The last year women cricket exhibition match didn’t attract much crowd. One of the reasons was the match started at 2 PM in summers when temperature was very high. This time the match is going to start when temperature cools down at 4 PM.

Australia has already started a Women’s Big Bash League on the line of big bash league. England is also organizing Female cricketing league known as Kia super league. We hope that soon we are able to see a women cricketing league just like IPL in India also.
