Team India’s vice-captain in Test Cricket Ajinkya Rahane, is in fray to make an ODI comeback soon. If the reports are considered, the Mumbaikar’s name was discussed during the selection meeting for the tour of New Zealand.
Ajinkya Rahane was also deemed as India’s possible no. 4 in the build up to World Cup 2019 squad, but could not make in the squad as Indian management continued to play musical chairs with the No.4 slot.
The meeting that took placed on Sunday (12 January), the selection committee members met to announce the squad for the New Zealand tour of India. India will play 5 T20Is and 3 ODIs along with two tests on almost a 40-day long tour of New Zealand.
However, the selection panel announced the squad for T20I series only, indicating that their might be some changes in the ODI squad and Test Squad for the upcoming tour.
The injuries to Hardik Pandya and Prithvi Shaw is another reason for the delay. In case of Pandya, he was almost set to tour New Zealand with India A team before BCCI finalized the name of Vijay Shankar at the 11th hour. BCCI later clarified that the rehabilitation process of Pandya is taking long time than expected and he is still not fully fit for bowling in international matches.
Another reason is Prithvi Shaw’s injury that the right handed batsman incurred in Ranji Trophy match. BCCI is waiting of the status update on his injury, as he is an important member of Indian Test setup and it is most likely that he will replace KL Rahul or Shubman Gill as backup opener in test setup.
A BCCI member also revealed that selectors also wanted to have a look at Australia series also and there are strong chances that selectors might call fringe players like Suryakumar Yadav and others to fill places that are still up for grabs.
