Ashish Nehra, former Indian fast bowler, is one of the highly regarded Indian fast bowlers. In the 18 years of his illustrious career, the veteran played for India under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli among others. In the 9 seasons of IPL that he played, Nehra played under the likes of Gautam Gambhir, Mahela Jayawardene, MS Dhoni and David Warner before announcing his retirement in 2017.
In a recent interview, Ashish Nehra named Rohit and Dhoni the two best captains in the business because of their passion. The World Cup winning hero also recalled his playing days and the traits he noticed in the captaincy style of MS Dhoni.
“In the later stages of my career, I played with him at Chennai Super Kings. There have been suggestions recently that he is overly passionate when it comes to CSK. Yes, he is very passionate about CSK but that doesn’t mean he is any less passionate when playing for India. I would rather say that it’s a good thing that an IPL captain is so attached to his franchise. Dhoni and Rohit Sharma are the two best captains in IPL because they are passionate about their jobs,” Ashish Nehra told The Times of India.
Ashish Nehra also talked about the challenges the IPL captaincy bring with it. “Leading an IPL team is not an easy job as it may seem to a lot of people. Unlike national teams, you get just two months to build a team and get it to perform. Captaining in T20s is tougher than Tests and ODIs. You have to remain calm and know your players really well to make decisions when the game moves so fast. Dhoni’s calm is the template and Rohit has also grown in the same manner,” he added.
Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni are the most successful captains of Indian Premier League. The two Indian stalwarts have helped their franchises scale new heights in world’s most successful Cricket League. However, a lot of credit for their success also goes to the most settled and strong outfits they have at their disposal. The two stalwarts of modern cricket have a quite similar captaincy style.
While Dhoni have led Chennai Super Kings to three IPL titles in his reign, Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians Paltan is the most successful IPL franchise with four title wins under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.
