Playing his third match of the season, R Ashwin issued first and final ‘Mankad warning’ to batsmen in yesterday’s match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. The warning came after R Ashwin let off RCB’s Aaron Finch with a warning in his first over.

Coming into bowl in the third over of powerplay, Ashwin caught Aaron Finch venturing out of his crease at the non-striker’s on 4th delivery of the over. Ashwin, though, went ahead with his action but did not deliver the ball as Finch strayed well out of his crease.

The old-Ashwin would have definitely ‘mankaded’ the Australian captain, but this Ashwin offered a wry smile and warned Finch to not leave the crease at non-strikers’ end. After watching Ashwin respecting the ‘Spirit of Game’, Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting couldn’t stop breaking into a laugh as Cameraman immediately panned to DC dugout.

During 2019 season of Indian Premier League, R Ashwin, then KXIP captain, took the world by surprise when he ‘mankaded’ Rajasthan Royals’ batsman Jos Buttler at non-striker’s end. After the runout, Rajasthan Royals stumbled and succumbed to defeat.

Though Ashwin did everything as per the laws that time also, Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting differed from off-spinner’s opinion and had a ‘hard conversion’ with him after reaching in UAE.

In August, Ponting had said on a podcast-  the Grade Cricketer: “Look, he’s a terrific bowler, and he’s done a great job in IPL for a long period of time now, but I must admit watching that last season [Ashwin running out Buttler], as soon as it happened and he did that, I actually sat our boys down and said ‘look, I know he’s done it, there’ll be others around the tournament who’ll think about doing this well, but that’s not going to be the way that we play our cricket, we won’t be doing that’.

“So that’s going to be a conversation and that’s going to be a hard conversation I will have to have with him, but I’m pretty sure he’ll take it on the chin. I think, even him, looking back now, he will probably say it was within the rules and he’s right to do it, but this is not within the spirit of the game, not in the way I want, at least with the Delhi Capitals anyway.”

Even Ashwin also agreed to Ponting thoughts and opinions. But now, after respecting Ponting decision for one time he has issued warning for all the upcoming matches.
