England will be going to play much important series of tests against Sri Lanka in the coming year. This series will be very important for them to make them alive in the ICC Test Championship. As England Cricket Board (ECB) has announced the squad for the Lankan tour. Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes has been excluded from the Squad as they have given rest due to continuous appearance in the cricket from a long time. They have also been rested due to decrease the bubble time for the all rounders.
England team will play two tests matches against Sri Lanka. Both the test matches will be played at the same venue that is Galle International Stadium and that will be played behind the closed doors under strict safety protocols. Jofra Archer is also given rest as the main speedster of England team should be well prepared and have to attain maximum fitness to join squad for the upcoming four match test series against India in February 2021. Ged, Father of Ben Stokes who has recently passed away due to brain cancer so it will be much needed break for him to spend more time with family.
Even England opener Rory Burns will also miss the Sri Lankan Series as he wants to spend time with his wife as both the couples are expecting their first child. With these absence of players, even Ollie Pope will also miss the series by sustaining a shoulder injury, but he will definitely travel to Sri Lanka with team members for preparation ahead of the series with India. Due to the absence of England openers, England Cricket Board has announced Johny Bairstow to the test squad. It was a surprise call for Bairstow as he hasn’t appeared in Test since December 2019.
Due to his continuous bad performance in the red ball cricket made him to drop off the squad. He has only scored only two fifties in his 10 tests match in 2019 and awful average of 18.55. ECB has also given chance to the new talents like Dan Lawrence, Essex batsman.
England team has the most lethal and experienced pace attack as they consists of great pacers like Stuart Broad and James Anderson. With them there are more options in the team for the bowling department like Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood and Olly Stone. Moeen Ali, Jack Leach and Dom Bess will be the spinner unit of the England team. In the last time when England played against Lanka, the spinner duo Jack Leach and Moeen Ali together managed to take 36 wickets.
With this players, to make a competitive squad England team picks seven more reserve players for the series. The backup wicketkeeper for England team will be Ben Foakes. He was the star performer against Sri Lanka when team clean swept the Lankan team in the three match series.
Both the tests matches will be played at same venue that is Galle International Stadium and that also behind the closed doors. The first test will be played on 14th January whereas the second test will be played on 22nd January. England team will travel to Lanka on 2nd January 2021 and will start the practice session from 5th January to 9th January at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium.
