Bold Decision coming From BCCI

The pathetic exit of Team India from the T20 World Cup 2022 is likely to pave the way for a much-needed change in their team and approach to the game’s shortest format. In the semi-final, a dominant England team defeated a team led by Rohit Sharma by 10 wickets to advance to the championship game.

All were taken aback by India’s lack of commitment in the knockout game, and experts believe that the team’s out-of-date strategy was the primary factor in their defeat. Many people think that it should make the team management clean out its prominent stable and bring in new talent in the coming days.

Senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, and others, according to reports, will focus more on the ODIs with the ODI World Cup in mind. This will allow the T20I team to undergo a major transformation in the coming years before the next T20 WC.

“The BCCI never asks anyone to retire. It is an individual decision. But yes, with just a handful of T20Is scheduled in 2023, most of the seniors will concentrate on ODIs and Test matches in that cycle,” stated by one of the sources from BCCI.

According to a PTI report, a BCCI source said that Rohit, Virat, and Ashwin will be let go gradually as the board looks to put together a team for the future.

The BCCI will leave Kohli and Rohit to decide their T20I future, even though it appears that Ashwin and Dinesh Karthik have played their final matches in the shorter format. If those with knowledge of developments are to be believed, a new team will be assembled for the 2024 T20 World Cup, with Hardik Pandya selected as the long-term captain.

It is understood that the T20Is will be put on hold for the next year while India plays at least 25 ODIs before the 50-over World Cup in India next year. India’s FTP schedule reveals that the team will only play 12 bilateral T20Is (home and away) until the 50-over World Cup, beginning with three games in New Zealand next week.

The grammar of Power Play batting might change with Shubman Gill in the team and Rishabh Pant, the  vice captain and a skilled opener. Not to mention the phenomenal talent of Prithvi Shaw, who Dravid has worked with but has repeatedly ignored.

Because Rohit and Kohli are promising names, the BCCI is likely to let them decide how to move forward in their careers. Rohit is 35 years old now, and even though he will be 37 in two years, it is unlikely that he will lead a T20I team at a global meet.

Karthik’s position as designated finisher was a temporary one in preparation for the T20 World Cup. Throughout the entirety of the tournament, the opposing batters did not perceive Ashwin as a serious threat. The Zimbabwe match was where he took three of his six wickets in six games, and his economy rate of 8.15 was not particularly impressive.

Washington Sundar, whose numerous injuries had established his position, will now receive a longer rope. KL Rahul, whose strike rate of 120.75 reflected everything wrong with the Indian team, will be the only tricky call. He is the only opener on top teams who has played two first overs and has not reached double digits against any top team in big games (4 against Pakistan, 9 against SA, 9 against England).

Despite a lot of criticism, Rahul has not improved his game. His poor performance has been so obvious that it will be hard to ignore when the selectors meet to choose a team for a T20 series against Sri Lanka.
