The inaugural edition of Lankan Premier League (LPL) has suffered an early setback as five marquee overseas players have pulled out from the tournament. The list includes David Miller, Dawid Malan, Faf Du Plessis, Andre Russell and Manvinder Bisla in particular and now, franchises are left with a number of readjustments just a few days ahead of tournament.
The decision from players have come because of various reasons including international assignments and injury. While the trio of David Miller and Faf Du Plessis and Dawid Malan will be participating in a limited-overs series in November, Andre Russell will miss the tournament because of injury.
After South African government gave a green signal recently, the English team will travel to South Africa next month for playing three ODIs and as many T20Is. The series will start from 27th of November and is supposed to walk in parallel with the LPL 2020. On the other hand, Russell, who is part of Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2020, suffered a knee injury recently and hasn’t played the last three fixtures for KKR. Another player missing the tournament will be Manvinder Bisla, whose exit remains unknown as of now.
The tournament is likely to get underway from 21st November and will culminate on 13th December. Five franchises naming Colombo Kings, Dambulla Hawks, Galle Gladiators, Jaffna Stallions and Kandy Tuskers will play a total of 23 games at two venues – Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Kandy and Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, Hambantota over the course of tournament.
While the absence of Faf, Miller, Malan and Russell will surely affect the appeal of tournament, the likes of Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Carlos Brathwaite, David Malan would like to put on stellar show to set the tournament rolling.
