Former Indian Batsman and the chief selector Devang Gandhi has revealed the consequences and challenges they were facing while picking the squads as per the need of team. The selection of perfect squad even moved around Suryakumar Yadav, who unfortunately missed the Australian tour. Devang Gandhi had completely agreed the fact that excluding Ambati Rayudu from the World cup squad was not a good option and was an inappropriate decision. During World Cup 2019, India were struggling to produce No.4 batsman who can play well in the middle overs when the team need the most and Ambati Rayudu was the best option to be suited in this role. Unfortunately Rayudu wasn’t selected for the squad which made him to announce retirement from the International cricket due to the post omission from the squad.
The journey of Indian team was best among other as they finished the league stage on top of the table and was the top contender to lift the trophy. Furthermore, the table turns up and down when they met New Zealand in the Semi-finals of World Cup 2019. It was well defined that Rayudu was more consistent towards the four positions in the batting order with lot of experience. His promising effort might make Indian Team something different, but was ignored. In place of Rayudu, Vijay Shankar was the one who got the chance in the squad who don’t even have the experience for No.4 spot.
With this much of hatred in selection, yet he had made all the critics silent before saying anything. He had displayed good performance in IPL 2020. Gandhi also stated that with the selection of Vijay Shankar over Rayudu can be a good option but then they realized that there was still lack of depth in batting which was dig out in the 4 spot. The former selector also said that Rayudu have all the rights to feel frustrated for not being selected in the squad. Because of this unexpected call, Rayudu even announced retirement from the International squad.
“I can understand Ambati Rayudu’s angst and reactions were justified”- Gandhi
“Yes, that was a mistake, but then we are humans too. At that time we seemed to have hit the right combination, but later we realized Rayudu’s presence might have helped. Actually, India had one bad day in office during the World Cup, and that’s why Rayudu’s absence became such a bug talking point. Apart from that one match, India had an excellent tournament. I can understand Rayudu’s angst and his reactions were justifies,” quoted by Gandhi to Times of India
