Rohit Sharma, the dashing opener from Mumbai, suffered a hamstring injury while going for a run in the 5th T20I between India and New Zealand at Mount Maunganui. Rohit Sharma pulled his calf in the 16th over of the innings and looked in utter discomfort after that. Even the treatment from physio did not give him relief and Rohit eventually retired in the same over after playing a handy innings of 60 runs.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has confirmed Shubman Gill will replace the injured Rohit Sharma in India’s Test squad to face New Zealand. Gill had been in India’s previous Test squad for their home series against Bangladesh, but is yet to make his debut.

The full squad for the two-match series in New Zealand is expected to be announced in the coming days

The Board of Control for Cricket has not yet named his replacement For New Zealand ODI series but it is confirmed that Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of rest of the New Zealand tour Due to injury. A BCCI source has stated in his statement that Mayank Agarwal is all set to be named his replacement in the ODI squad. Mayank will join KL Rahul and Prithvi Shaw as backup opener in the ODI squad.

It is also expected that Shubhman Gill might replace him in the test squad. Shubhman Gill impressed all after the scores of 83 and 204 not out in a drawn first unofficial Test against New Zealand A in Christchurch and might get his chance in the test XI this time around.

With Rohit, both the specialist ODI openers (Shikhar Dhawan is already out of the tour with Shoulder injury) have been ruled out of the ODI series and India will be forced to open with a fresh opening pair this time.

The old selection committee under MSK Prasad picked the replacements but it might take some time for the official announcement as convenor of the selection committee, secretary Jay Shah, is on his way to New Zealand along with treasurer Arun Dhumal. Once the secretary’s approval comes, the replacements will be officially announced. But the selectors have already sent the names, the source said.

Team India will play a 3-match ODI series followed by a two test assignment in this month only. The selectors are yet to name the test squad for the tour.
