Gautam Gambhir, Former Indian Opener has put allegations over the selectors for not making any proper statements or any updates on injury of Rohit Sharma to the Indian skipper Virat Kohli. It is a very harsh call as it’s the epitome right of skipper to know the updates of his teammates but selectors weren’t upto the mark in providing it.
Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper admitted that there was a lack of transparency in the absence of Rohit Sharma ahead of Australian Test series which will commence from 17th December 2020.
Speaking on the statements, Indian skipper Virat Kohli said he thought Rohit would board the flight to Australia for the ODIs series as well but his return towards Indian after the conclusion of IPL2020 was unclear when all the teammates took flight towards Australia from UAE.
Kohli also admitted that if both the injured players travel with whole teammates in Australia and undergo rehabilitation there itself like Wriddhiman Saha does, then the possibility of presence would have been increased. Due to the hamstring injury which was acquired during the mid season of IPL2020 made him unavailable for the Australian white ball cricket series.
Indian Team vice captain Rohit Sharma although having injury still he played the one match of league stage, playoffs and the final made him in worse mode of injury, that made him to return to India to undergo rehabilitation at National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore. His participation even after having injury made him to answer many conspiracy questions. This call made from him conveyed choosing franchises team over the national side which is a definitely a harsh call. While on the other side Ishant Sharma has only played one match in the IPL2020 after acquiring injury which made him to exit from the tournament. Now he has been also ruled out of the Australian Test series which is officially announced by BCCI on Thursday.
Gautam Gambhir defends Virat Kohli:
After the confession made by Indian Skipper Virat Kohli over the absence of Rohit Sharma, put BCCI into the bunch of questions over failure in dealing with the proper statements on the fitness of Rohit Sharma’s injury. Even Gautam Gambhir had also slammed selectors for not providing better clarity of updates to the skipper. He said that captain is the key man of tram and he have all the rights to know the goods bad of his teammates as he is the one who would face the criticism.
“That’s not right. You have to back Virat Kohli on this. He’s the captain,, he’s the guy who is leading the team on the cricket field. He’s the guy who is going to face the criticism. He’s the guy who has got to face all the the fire. So he should be there in the mix. He should know exactly what’s happening with all the players,” said by Gambhir to ESPNcricinfo.
“And that is the responsibility of the selectors, that id the responsibility of probably the chairman as well. Virat Kohli should always be in the loop because he is the flag bearer of Indian Cricket at the moment. If something goes wrong, we end up criticising the captain a lot. So we have to back Virat Kohli if he was not given enough information about Rohit Sharma. That’s not fair on him,” quoted by Gautam Gambhir.
