Cricket is a game full of unpredictability. You can’t rule any team out of competition until they are out of competition. Such is the scenario with Chennai Super Kings. Though they have struggled so far in the season. With 3 wins in 10 matches, they need heavy luck to qualify for the playoffs.
First and foremost, they need to win all the remaining matches from here that will take them to 14 points after league stage. On the other hand, top three teams – Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore need to keep winning so that Kolkata Knight Riders, KXIP, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad end up with less than 14 points after league stages.
Here are a few scenarios that might see them qualifying for the playoffs-
If SRH wins today’s game against Rajasthan Royals and CSK wins against MI on Friday, the bottom four teams will tie at 8 points with NRR separating them. This necessitates that Delhi Capitals should win against Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday to keep KKR at 10 points and strengthen their position at top with 16 points. On Saturday eve, Sunrisers Hyderabad should get another win against Kings XI Punjab to stop their winning spree. This win will take Sunrisers Hyderabad to 10 points in 11 matches.
On Super Sunday, Chennai Super Kings have to win against Royal Challengers Bangalore to reach 10 points in 12 games. And in second match, Mumbai Indians need to beat Rajasthan Royals to grab 2 important points.
With MI, RCB at 14 points each, Kings XI Punjab need to register a win against Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday. With that win, Kings XI Punjab, KKR, CSK and SRH all remain at 10 points in table. Now, SRH need to concede defeat against Delhi Capitals to make sure SRH remain at 10 points in 12 matches.
Mumbai Indians need to win their next game against Royal Challengers Bangalore to make sure they remain in top 2 with 16 points in 12 matches. Chennai Super Kings will get another 2 points from their next game against Kolkata Knight Riders and also ensure Kolkata Knight Riders stay at 10 points after 13 matches.
Now if Kings XI Punjab beat Rajasthan Royals, they will have 12 points with that win. Mumbai Indians’ win against Delhi Capitals in next match will equal them in points them with 18 points in 13 matches for both.
And if Sunrisers Hyderabad loses either of their game against Royal Challengers Bangalore and MI, they will finish group stage with 12 points. On the other hand, CSK will beat Kings XI Punjab to stop KXIP at 12 points in 14 matches and qualify themselves with 14 points. Though the scenarios are quite difficult, CSK will hope something finally goes their way.
