Gautam Gambhir, former Indian opener and Kolkata Knight Riders Captain, has opined that had Andre Russell represented KKR more under his captaincy, the KRR outfit had won more IPL titles during his 7 years rein from 2011-2017. Gautam Gambhir also known as ‘bowler’s captain for his wonderful bowling rotation, begged two IPL title for the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise in 2012 and 2014.

“Imagine Russell going for Rs 50 lakhs to KKR and Pawan Negi for Rs 8 crores to (Delhi) Daredevils. I probably wished that he (Russell) would have been there for seven years when I was playing, we would have certainly won one or two more,” Gambhir said while speaking on Star Sports ‘Cricket Connected’ show.

The deRuss aka ‘Andre Russell’ does not need any introduction for his T20 exploits the world over. He is one of the rarest batsmen who can hit sixes at will without much footwork and timing. He just lines-up the bowler and the rest is history.

Andre Russell was picked by Delhi Daredevils for just 50 Lakhs in 2012, but the lack of chances and injuries kept blocking the prowess of the talented West Indian before KKR picked the all-rounder in 2014 for just 60 Lakhs. Then started the glorious journey that made him one of the most potent weapons in shortest format of the game.

However, in his inaugural edition for KKR, the all-rounder played in just a couple of games but the next season proved to be a mile-stone in his career. The 2015 edition saw Russell score 326 runs at an astounding strike-rate of 192 along with 14 wickets. In 2016 also, Russell kept the momentum going with 15 Wickets and 188 runs to his name. Before a-year ban in 2017 forced him to miss the 2017 edition.

The all-rounder has been riddled with the injuries in last couple of years missing out on most of the international and T20 assignments, however, he managed to represent KKR fighting with the injuries as he amassed 13 wickets and more than 300 runs in the 2018 season and 510 runs and 11 wickets in 2019 season.
